People just aren't returning bottles and cans for recycling anymore

CommonWealth Beacon reports that only one in three eligible bottles and cans are now being returned for deposits in Massachusetts, the lowest rate in the country. Recycling advocates vow to continue efforts to raise that by increasing the deposit from 5 to 10 cents; accuse local Big Seltzer, that is, Polar Beverages, of blocking their efforts. Polar snorts at its alleged stranglehold on the legislature, but allows that it would rather see bottles and cans become part of municipal household recycling pickups rather than continuing the current store-based system.
