The state Department of Environmental Protection forecast for today: "Wildfire smoke from Canada will continue to enter the region and influence particle pollution levels. Fine particle levels are forecast to average in the Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups (USG) range." And by "sensitive groups," they mean seniors, people with heart or lung ailments and little kids. So another good day to stay inside an air-conditioned room, or put on one of those N95 masks you probably still have in a closet or drawer somewhere.
311 complaint of the day: Willow down

A concerned resident filed a 311 complaint today about a willow tree in the Public Garden that toppled over and into one end of the lagoon.
BPS bus company racked up $400,000 in fines for late, missing buses in just one semester

WBUR reports on the fines levied by BPS against Transdev for the period between March and June due to buses that were at least an hour late or just never showed up. Although the company's current contract with BPS, signed in 2023, allows for a $500 fine for each violation.
Man on scooter shot dead on York Street in Dorchester

WCVB reports a man riding a scooter on York Street between Greenwood and Glenway streets in Dorchester was fatally shot around 11:50 a.m.

John Jacob, who owns several Napper Tandy's bars in the suburbs, told the Boston Licensing Board today he hopes to reopen Clarke's, 21 Merchants Row, "as soon as possible," with pretty much the same food, drinks and seating as Clarke's, which closed in April.

The Boston Licensing Board decides tomorrow whether to let Patrick Lyons of Beacon Hill take over the closed Beacon Hill Pub, 149 Charles St., and transform it into a calmer fine-dining restaurant modeled on an English ale house.
Man shot on Bromfield Street downtown

NBC Boston reports somebody was shot on Bromfield Street, a few doors in from Tremont Street, around 5 a.m. and was taken to a local hospital with injuries not considered life threatening.
